Frank TYBOR and Mandi MARKEE won the U.S. Junior Doublehanded Championship and US SAILING's Bemis Trophy. Kyle KOVACS won the U.S. Junior Singlehanded Championship and US SAILING's Smythe Trophy. The two championships, hosted by North Cape Yacht Club in LaSalle, MI, and sponsored by Vanguard Sailboats, brought together 60 junior sailors representing the best from across the country who qualified by winning qualifying events at local and regional levels.
At the U.S. Junior Doublehanded Championship, sailed in Club 420s, Tybor and Markee won with a total of 19 points after ten races (one discard). In second place and five points behind the winners were Erik Storck and John Kempton from Centerport Yacht Club (Centerport, NY). Zachary BROWN and Nick MARTIN from Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego, CA, finished in third place. The sportsmanship trophy was awarded to Peter Fallon (Falmouth, MA).
In the competition of the U.S. Junior Singlehanded Championship, sailed in Lasers, Kovacs won the event with a total of 27 points after ten races and one discard. Kovacs also won the sportsmanship award. Reed JOHNSON (Toms River, NJ) closely followed trailing by four points and finishing in second place. In third place and with 39 points overall was Michael SCOTT (Kaneohe, HI).
